#311: Hail to the Lord's Anointed

lutheranhymnsThe last verse talks about the visit of the Magi and their bringing gold and incense to Jesus, and in fact even refers to them with the anachronistic/weird translation "Kings"! So why isn't this in the Epiphany section proper? The other verses speak more in general about Jesus' ministry and all the good things he does. It's not a direct paraphrase, but a lot of it seems to be a callback to Isaiah. (There's a section in one of the Gospels where Jesus actually directly reads from Isaiah and is like "yeah, that's me," and our choir did an arrangement of that text, so maybe I was primed to look for that allusion.)
The music predates the lyrics--it looks like there might have been a different German text attached to it first? "Freut euch, ihr lieben" is something about happiness/you/love...But those are vague enough that Googling them produces hits for other German-language hymns, lots of joy and loveliness going around back in the day. (Well also lots of sectarian violence, but you know.)
