Do the writers have ridiculous names?

Not the craziest, but they're up there. Text writer is "Synesius of Cyrene," and the music composer is "W. Daman"--no first name, just W.

Cyrene? Like Simon of?

Yeah. This guy lived in the 3-400s, keeping it old school!

Does it still have relevance?

Not sure how much is translator effect, but "by anxious thoughts oppressed" sounds like me frequently.

An update: this was the fourth Sunday in Advent, and I got to be home for my mom (a Lutheran pastor) to preach. Afterwards she was like "good hymns today, huh."

"Yeah," I said, "well, they're all good this time of year."

"But you want to get to the good ones, and not something like...Hark the Glad Sound."

I rest my case (for it not being the most impressive leadoff hymn).
