Who is the Merle that this tune is named after?
Apparently the composer's older sister, who taught him to play piano. Sweet!
What is the story behind the text?
This is a paraphrase of Zechariah's song when his son, John the Baptist, was born.
What's his deal?
Zechariah was really old and didn't believe it when an angel showed up and told him that he and his wife, Elizabeth, would have a child. So to punish him for his skepticism he wasn't allowed to speak until the baby was born. Elizabeth wanted to name him Zechariah Jr. but Zechariah was able to motion for a blackboard and write "his name is John," and then he was able to speak again.
Weird quote...
It became the motto of Puerto Rico, whose capital is San Juan. Fun facts!
