#293: That Boy-Child of Mary
Feb. 1st, 2021 10:50 pmThis isn't exactly a call-and-response kind of hymn, but some of the verses have a question-and-answer structure. Verse 1: "What shall we call him?" Verse 2: "His name is Jesus." Verse 3: "How can he save us?" Verse 4: "Gift of the Father, to human mother, makes him our brother." I probably wouldn't read that as an answer to verse 3 if the first two verses weren't a question-and-answer pair, but I think one interpretation is "How is it that this baby could possibly save us? Because he's both God and a human like us."
Anyway, this reminded me of the question-and-answer structure of "Mary Had a Baby," although I doubt there's a direct relation. (Again, I am pleasantly surprised at my own Googling abilities, because I was like..."is this just a folk song? did James Taylor write it? James Taylor, Bruce Cockburn, close enough.")
